Canon Point: End of the movie, right as the sun begins to rise.
Canon History: Here you go!Personality: There are several people who might peg Nyx Ulric as arrogant. This is largely drawn from the fact that Nyx is just plain old confident in his abilities and at times "a little" (read: pretty darn) reckless when it comes to fighting. These two traits are showcased very early on in the movie during the opening fight between the Glaive and the Empire. Not only does Nyx disregard a direct order to retreat but he is is also called 'hero' by a fellow Glaive. This nickname follows him throughout the events that unfold. His arrogance is also displayed upon responding to someone telling him to be careful as there were people waiting for him by saying he was worth the wait.
But Nyx is not as arrogant as people think. In fact he's the opposite. While it's true that he is confident in his abilities, he is also selfless. He will risk life and limb to protect others regardless of whether he has his powers or not. When there are talks of a peace treaty between Insomnia and the Empire, which would mean the Kings' Glaive was no longer needed, Nyx spoke with his captain - Titus Drautos - about what he would do. Nyx told him simply that he would return to Galahd, his home, and help defend people there as the peace treaty would leave everything outside of Crown City/Insomnia in the Empire's territory. A fact that angers several other Glaives.
His selflessness is shown most clearly when he takes the Ring of the Lucii from Lunafreya, putting it on himself despite witnessing two people being set on fire after being deemed unworthy. By doing so he spares Lunafreya, knowing that he cannot risk letting her die as she has her own duty to finish. When meeting with the Kings inside the ring he is deemed unworthy of having the power as he is not of royal blood. He is also told that he must pick between Lunafreya and Libertus as to who would be the price. Nyx refuses to choose either and when it seems as though he will die tells them point blank that they'll be losing their "precious ring". Thankfully, the spirit of King Regis' vouches for Nyx and he is granted the powers of the ring in exchange for his life. An agreement that Nyx has no problem accepting as it means he can give Lunafreya and Libertus time to escape the city.
Nyx is an immensely loyal individual who values his duty to the Glaive, and more specifically King Regis. That loyalty largely comes due to the fact the King saved him when he was young, and while most likely not Regis' intention, left Nyx feeling as though he was indebted to him. As a result of that loyalty, he chooses to side with the royal family when it is revealed that not only Drautos but several other members of the Glaive are traitors. Even when the peace treaty is announced early in the movie Nyx comments that he's alright with the terms - which would mean his home would be given up to the Empire and most likely in danger - because it would still mean peace. He trusts - to an extent - that King Regis knows what he's doing. He takes his duties very seriously, working nonstop to protect Lady Lunafreya since the last mission he was given was to get her to safety once the city is under attack - and then following her when she insists on going to the King.
It can go without saying that Nyx has seen quite a bit of horror as a soldier. He has seen people die - but there is one death that clearly haunts him more than the others. That would be the death of his sister Selena. While the events of her death aren't clear, what is clear that Nyx was unable to save her. He still has frequent flashbacks to her death whenever his friends are in danger, showing clear signs of PTSD despite the fact he is forced to work through it. Selena's death becomes a driving force to protect his friends - his second family - especially as the flashbacks occur most frequently when one of them is in danger.
Despite everything, however, Nyx wants to believe that there is still hope out there. This is partially inspired by Selena's desire for a better world. It's a belief he carries throughout all his battles, and when he parts ways with Libertus and Lunafreya he tells him that Luna is "carrying the future of the world in her hands", and puts utmost faith that Libertus will be able to keep her safe while he finishes the King's orders. Even after the battle is over and Nyx awaits the sunrise that will mean his death he assures Drautos that there's still hope for their homes and for everyone. His last words are the wish that Noctis will rule well, again showing that he believes that the better world his sister dreamt of could become a reality even if neither of them will get to see it.
An additional thing to add at the end here - as it is largely headcanon - is the fact that Ignis and Nyx knew each other prior to the events of both the game and the movie. This is agreed upon between both myself and Ignis' mun! This is featured in the sample thread but just in case I wanted to make a note of it here!
Abilities: As a member of the Glaive Nyx is granted magical abilities by King Regis - and then after Regis' death by wearing the Ring of the Lucii. As he was taken from the very end of the movie he would technically still have these abilities. With time in-game, however, they will fade away and there will be repercussions if he overdoes it until then.
As the Ring of Lucii is shown to leave an effect on the wearer (Shown
here with Nyx and
here with Noctis) Nyx will already be arriving with a rather messed up arm. By using magic for extended periods of time the effects of the Ring with worsen, spreading back up his arm and to his face even. He'll also run the risk of his arm just, y'know, catching on fire...
As for his abilities they are:
Warp - Much like Noctis in-game, Nyx has the ability to warp from one place to the other. However he can only go as far as the object - generally his dagger - he throws. He can travel a good distance by chain-warping, but is also prone to fatigue. So there won't be any warping from one island to another with him.
General Magic - Nyx is shown to use Lightning, Fire and Protect while fighting and these will be the two spells he will be bringing with him. Lightning and Fire are just as they sound, he can shoot the respective element out of his hand and at an enemy while Protect allows him to create a temporary shield for himself and others. That shield can be broken through, however.
Inventory: One torn up uniform.
That's it. Poor guy didn't have much else.
